Super Room Redo

This month's Silhouette challenge theme is My Favorite Things.  One of my absolute favorite things is vinyl.  I really can't imagine my life without it now!  It's so versatile.  And my favorite part...it's REVERSIBLE!!  You can peel it right back off!

So when we first decorated our nursery we bought some vinyl birch trees, and I absolutely loved them.  I transferred the trees to the dining room walls when we converted it into a playroom.  So with the newly bare walls in my son's room, I thought it was the perfect time to upgrade the nursery into more of a big boy room...something less gender neutral and something he can grow into it.  Well there was no question on the theme...it HAD to be Superman!  I searched everywhere for a cityscape scene to really bring the room together, but nothing was really catching my eye, and the price tags were deterring me even more.  I toyed with the idea of making my own, but the task seemed daunting.  The sheer size of the wall was overwhelming.  I finally worked up the nerve to give it a try...and I couldn't be happier with the results.  I'll never buy another wall decal again!  It was so much easier than I though it would be!

I used a combination of the building and tower shapes from the Silhouette online shape store.  First I made a mock-up in Silhouette Studio of what I wanted the decal to look like on the walls.  Notice how my original vision was completely different.  I first thought it would be neat to have solid buildings all in different colors to make a big statement on the wall behind the crib.

It wasn't until I taped up all the different vinyls to the wall that I realized it was WAY too busy for the room.  Maybe if it was on a smaller scale it would have looked better, but I decided I wanted to go more simple.  A little more like the trees that I loved so much.

I wanted a little pop of color, so in the end I decided on this design.

I wanted to show you a couple of the steps I went through to create the outline of the building, but you can scroll down further to see pictures of how it all turned out.

First I used the tracing tool to trace the outer edge of the building so I could have a shape without the windows.

Then I used the offset tool to create a shape slightly larger than the building.  This created an outline of the building.  I added the windows back and it was as simple as that!

I thought it would be best to cut the building up into manageable pieces, not only to make it easier to put on the wall, but I'm secretly a big vinyl hoarder.  :)

I was able to cram a bunch of building pieces together and only ended up using 2 rolls of white vinyl for the entire project.  Not too shabby.  I used another whole roll for the blue.

So there you have it!  Easy, right?  It only took me a couple minutes months to whip that up!

So now to the good part...

I'm so glad I went simple in the end.  I was able to go bold with the fabrics.  And my amazing Grandmother made a quilt that fits the room perfectly.  I love how everything turned out.

My goal was to make a room with a Superman feel without being overwhelmingly Superman. 

So instead I added little touches here and there to make it a little more subtle.

I also added little touches of all his interests.
